How to Minimize Pores: Effective Strategies for Smoother Looking Skin
Pores are a natural part of your skin, and while you can’t shrink or remove them, their visibility can be managed. With consistent care, optimized cleansing, and smart product choices, you can achieve smoother and more radiant-looking skin.
Many people (myself included) feel a bit insecure about how large their pores are, and that’s completely normal. Pore size has always been a hot topic in skincare, especially now, with studies showing that roughly 30% of Gen Z shoppers in the US rank pore management as a top concern. This makes pores the #3 skincare priority for this generation, highlighting a growing need for effective solutions.
This drives people to search for "pore shrinking" products that promise to shrink or even erase pores. Let’s bust a common myth: You cannot shrink or remove your skin's pores. They perform a critical function for your skin’s health, allowing sebum to protect and maintain your skin’s barrier. Not only that, but pore size is also primarily genetic, and can't be magically changed.
You cannot shrink or remove your skin's pores.
As such, beware of any products that promise to shrink or erase pores. Your pores are here to stay, but fortunately, there are effective ways to reduce their visible size and refine your skin’s texture. Here’s how.
Understanding Pores: A Simple Analogy
Pores are essential for healthy skin. They act as channels for your skin's natural oils that moisturize and protect you from external irritants, but when they’re clogged with oil and debris, they can become a lot more noticeable, essentially being highlighted by the dirt in and around them.
I like to compare the way pores look on skin to how dimples look on a golf ball. This analogy helps visualize how clogged pores, much like dimples filled with dirt, become more pronounced and noticeable, tying directly into the importance of regular cleansing to maintain smooth skin. Small and concave, almost invisible from afar but definitely there when you get up close. When dirt collects on the surface of a golf ball, each dimple becomes more and more apparent -- your pores are the same way!
Instead of aiming to shrink your pores permanently, focus on keeping them clean and your skin healthy. By managing buildup and enhancing skin elasticity, you can reduce pore size visibility without relying on ineffective or damaging methods.

Targeted Skincare Strategies to Minimize Pore Visibility
Optimize Your Cleansing Routine for Smaller-Looking Pores
Are you cleansing your skin effectively? Cleansing is one of the simplest ways to effectively target and remove the dirt buildup that contributes to visible pore size. Enhancing this critical step will help you manage visible pore size more effectively, since chances are, you already cleanse your face daily -- probably in the morning just after waking up. But you can go beyond just a simple morning cleanse to better address pore size concerns. Here are two ways I recommend enhancing your current routine:
- Switch to cleansing your face twice daily: Not just a morning cleanse, but an evening cleanse, too. Cleansing at night is especially important because it helps remove buildup accumulated from throughout the day. Experimenting with a gentle morning cleanse to kick off your daily routine, and ending the day with an exfoliating evening cleanse, can be a great way to ensure your skin is being thoroughly cleansed, and reduces the opportunity for dirt to accumulate in and around your pores. Beware of over-cleansing though; I would recommend using a gentle + exfoliating cleanser combo to avoid over-drying your skin, and to avoid possible rebound oil production.
- Give oil cleansing a try: This is a two-step method which involves: first, washing your face with an oil-based cleanser which will dissolve substances like makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum; and second, following up with a gentle, water-based cleanser, which removes any oil residue from the initial cleanse. The result is cleaner pores while still preserving your skin's natural oils, which are essential for maintaining a healthy skin barrier. The reason this method may be effective is because of how oil and water interact on your skin, helping to push oil-based dirt such as sebum out of your pores, leaving your skin looking visibly smoother.
See below for a quick overview of my recommendations utilizing both a "two cleanses per day" routine, with an occasional oil cleanse once or twice a week.
Key Ingredients for Reducing Pore Visibility
When targeting how large your pores appear, certain ingredients can help you more effectively manage removing dirt buildup, but also preventing it in the first place.
- Promote skin elasticity with retinol: Skin elasticity plays a significant role in how visible your pores appear. As skin loses firmness over time, pores may appear larger. Incorporate ingredients like retinol to maintain skin elasticity and improve texture. Retinol is a powerful ingredient that boosts collagen production and encourages cell turnover, leading to firmer, smoother skin. But beware: retinol can be irritating at first, so if you're new to retinol, start with a lower concentration and use it once or twice a week to avoid irritation before gradually increasing frequency. Use retinol at night maybe 2–3 times per week and follow up with SPF during the day to protect against UV sensitivity.
- Consider chemical exfoliants like AHAs and BHAs: Exfoliation is essential for maintaining smooth skin and unclogging pores. Chemical exfoliants, like AHAs and BHAs, are particularly effective. Use these products sparingly, no more than 2–3 times per week, to avoid irritation, as overuse can compromise your skin’s protective barrier and lead to increased sensitivity or dryness.
- Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): AHAs such as glycolic acid work on the skin's surface to remove dead skin cells, ultimately improving texture and tone.
- Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs): BHAs such as salicylic acid, penetrate deeper into the pores to dissolve oil and debris, providing a thorough clean for those with oily or acne-prone skin.
- Prioritize non-comedogenic products: Opt for non-comedogenic products to avoid clogging your pores. These formulations are designed to minimize pore blockage while still providing hydration and nourishment. Check product labels carefully, especially for moisturizers and sunscreens, as heavier formulations can exacerbate clogged pores.
What Does Non-Comedogenic Really Mean?
When it comes to choosing the right products to address pore size concerns, “non-comedogenic” is a helpful — though slightly nuanced — term that can guide you toward better choices. Starting with the basics, non-comedogenic products are specifically designed to avoid clogging your pores.
The term “comedogenic” comes from “comedo,” which is the medical word for blackheads and whiteheads. These are the types of acne that are caused by blocked pores. So, when a product is labeled as “non-comedogenic,” it means that it’s formulated with ingredients which are less likely to cause those blockages.
Sounds straightforward, right? Just buy non-comedogenic products, and you’re good to go! Well, not quite. There’s no universal standard for what qualifies as “non-comedogenic.” What clogs one person’s pores might work perfectly fine for someone else. Breakouts depend on your unique skin type and sensitivities, so while “non-comedogenic” is a helpful label, it’s ultimately a marketing term — not a foolproof answer. That said, it’s still a useful tool when navigating the overwhelming world of skincare.
The real value of non-comedogenic products lies in prevention. After all, no one wants a product that actively causes blackheads or acne (which is why you’ll never see anything marketed as “comedogenic.”) Think of “non-comedogenic” as a guideline — an indicator that a product might be a good choice if you’re prone to breakouts. But it’s not the final word! Always check the ingredient list to ensure a product aligns with your skin’s unique needs.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
While the recommendations above can help minimize how large your pores appear, be cognizant of a few pitfalls when making changes to your routine.
- Over-Exfoliating: While exfoliation is essential for clearing clogged pores, doing it too frequently can irritate the skin and compromise its barrier, leading to inflammation and potentially larger-looking pores. Stick to 2–3 times per week for chemical exfoliants.
- Using Pore Strips: Although pore strips can deliver short-term satisfaction by removing blackheads, they often damage the skin’s surface and stretch the edges of pores over time, making them appear larger. Try to avoid pore strips (I know how satisfying they can be, though!)
- Skipping Sunscreen: UV exposure breaks down collagen, leading to loss of elasticity and more visible pores. Daily sunscreen use is essential to protect against this damage.
- Picking or Squeezing Pores: Tempting as it might be, picking at your pores can lead to scarring, infection, and even permanently enlarged pores. Opt for gentle treatments like salicylic acid instead.
Embrace Healthy-Looking Skin
Pores are a natural and necessary part of your skin’s anatomy. While their size can’t be changed, their visibility can be managed with the right routine. Focus on consistent cleansing, targeted treatments like retinol and chemical exfoliants, and the use of non-comedogenic products to achieve a refined and glowing complexion.
The journey to smoother skin isn’t about eliminating pores but learning to care for them in a way that enhances your skin’s natural look. With patience and a strategic approach, you can reduce their prominence and enjoy more radiant, healthy-looking skin.
